Overview:
Battlefield 1942 was indeed a fantastic game which brought a great experiance of World War 2 to the PC. It recieved awesome ratings from game websites, and redefined the FPS world...
Battlefield Vietnam continues the great experiance of PC gaming, as the second game of the Battlefield Series. EA Games accomplished a marvolous task when releasing this game from the incredible special features and maps of Vietnam, which bring the feel of M16's and AK-47's to your monitor. The game now has many mods out for download one of which is the BF 1942 mod with 3 new maps.
Setting / Maps:
The game consists multiple maps from the well known land of Vietnam. These maps, brought from the Vietnam War, contain different surroundings and environments such as: City, Jungle, Rivers, Air Battling, MORE Air Battling, Mountains, and much more.
Pick up a game today for only $9.99 and travel through the rich jungles of Vietnam, or pound your way down the streets of Quang Tri to capture your enemy's flag for victory.
Many BFV Players find themselves inside one of the many Huey Gunships tearing up the land. The skies of Vietnam are constantly lit up with missles and machine gun fire, as the chopper pilots battle off.
Objective:
The basic objective to Battlefield Vietnam is the same as most FPS games. There are many flags which the 2 teams fight to capture. Every time a flag is captured the team can now spawn there and it adds to the ticket drain.
Ticket Drain - Other team starts to loose tickets or points continuously when a certain ratio of flags is captured by the other team to the other. Eventually the tickets go down drastically like -1 ticket per 2 seconds.
Obviously killing the other team is what you are primarliy worried about, that and hoping they don't sneek up behind to with a knife in their hands. Main bases are very important to this game and without one your team has a major disadvantage. Main bases is where helicopters, planes spawn and where most of your teams equpiment is for AA, etc.

Kits / Vehicles:
1. Air -
*All US Helicopters have a pick-up cord. Can drop the cord to airlift certain vehicles.
Huey Gunship:
The famous Huey Gunship is by far the most popular and destructive piece of metal in the game. Many player go solo with the Huey shooting off missles left and right at armor, helicopters, and even infantry. With a gunner, this vehicle becomes even more crazy. You now have a better advantage against other helicopters and even able to shoot down planes with enough accuracy. The well-known "Circle Rape" has become a somewhat irritating to infantry as during this chaos the pilot spins around base in the chopper, shooting everything that moves with its spray of missles.
Transport Huey:
This chopper has all of the controlability of the huey except no missles and many more seats. You can store 5 passengers on this chopper, 2 of which seats have stationary guns. This chopper is used many times to take flags quickly, get a full chopper and move to a cap zone.
Chinook:
The Chinook stores many passengers and is only available in a few maps. It is much much slower than the others, and is usually described as flying a bus. This helicopter holds 8 passengers I believe 2 of which have a gun pointing outide the chopper. The pilot seet has a machine gun and the co-pilot seat missles and grenade launcher. Hitting things with the grenade launchers is a difficult task.
Loach:
The Loach is a helicopter brough to the game by one of EA's new patches which also came with more maps and bug fixes. This helicopter is very sensitive to mouse movement, and I mean VERY sensitive. The pilot has a double machine gun on this, there are no other guns available to this chopper. The co-pilot seat sits halfway out the chopper with his/her gun.
Mi-8:
Another helicopter of the game. This piece of equipment has its advantages as well as the Huey. To proove as a equal force to the Huey Gunship, the Mi-8 contains 2 double missle shooters. Firing once, automatically shoots off 2 missles left and right. Each click (right and left) fire these, and shooting them together, well, we can say it causes havoc. Four missles fired at once coming towards your Huey does not look like a nice gift to say the least, and you better be good in the air to avoid these "mini nukes." This chopper does not have a gunner seat for a machine gun, which seems to be the hardest thing Mi-8 pilots face. The Huey's machine gun causes large amounts of damage to the Mi-8, but the power of its double missles are balanced with that force.
Mi8-Cargo:
This helicopter is much like the Chinook for US, except this is for the NVA forces. It hols more passengers than the Chinook if my sources are correct, and does not contain guns. But as on the Chinook, passengers in the last so seats can hang out the back and fire off Sa-7's and take down choppers if the shots are planned right. It is most oftenly used to cap mains, the chopper sits hight up above a flag and everyone parshoots down on the flag. And why is it so good? Well, the Mi8-Cargo serves as a spawn point for NVA so they can continuously spawn in to keep attempting for capture at a Main base.
F-4 Phantom:
Ahhhh, the Phantom. This plane, brought to the war by the US forces, frustrates many infantry soldiers by the enormous wall of fire rolling towards them. By swooping down to a host spot on a map and right-clicking, a F-4 pilot can cause a lot of damage. The blaze of chemicals and fire hurt most dropped in front of the target. The Phantom is only given 3 of these deadly bombs to be dropped on the victims' heads.
These catastrophic aircrafts are not only dangerous to ground forces. This F-4 Phantom also has a harmful weapon for the left-click. With the invention of heak-seeking missles, the Phantom can become annoying to other plane pilots. You better keep an eye on your tail or be damn good if you want to survive in the skies of Vietnam with a Phantom in the air.
Corsair:
The Corsair, for the US forces, is the slowest of all the planes combined. Its a task to take off with its speed and the possibility of others shooting at you. Once in the air however and on a man's tail, the gun will damage him a heck of a lot. It takes about 4 seconds of pure hitting to take them down. So its slow, but deadly.
Mig-21 Plane, Mig-17 Plane
Mig-21 / Mig-17:
The Mig-21 and Mig-17 are both planes provided to the NVA (North Vietnam Army). First the Mig-21... This aircraft contains a set of many many single fire missles which, when hit correctly, will take down any plane with one hit. By left-clicking in this plane, you have a very accurate missles firing at your enemy. The other weapon equiped on this plane is a single fire machine gun. If you keep on a man's tail while firing this, I guarantee you will cause some damage. The Mig-17 consists of a multiple (and I mean a multiple) number of bombs for strikes on any piece of armor or lines of infantry. There are 4 of these bombs in your clip which reloads automatically after releasing all four. The other feature on this plane, is the double machine gun which causes MUCH amounts of damage to aircraft around you. Stick on them and you will take them down in moments.
2. Infantry -
So you hear all of this crazy talk about the planes and helicopters, so how, you ask do these poor fellas survive out there!? Well these "poor fellas" have their equipment for the appropriate occasion as well. Remember that Hueys and Phantoms are on US side, and Mi-8, Mig-21 / Mig-17, are on NVA.
US Assault:
M16, CAR-15, XM-148, Mossberg Shotgun, Grenades
NVA Assault:
AK-47, AKMS, Grenades
US / NVA Assault:
The assault kit of both US and NVA are probably the most used kits in the game. The accuracy of the guns are incredible and good for both close and far range. The US Assault has 4 different setups. One has a M16 which packs quite a force when combined with a steady hand. On some maps the primary gun for the US assault is the CAR-15. This gun makes much less noise and somewhat more accurate than the M16. And there is another gun the US Assault Kit has, the XM-148. This gun is simply like the CAR-15 only it can not zoom in and it has a handy dandy grenade launcher underneath, for some hardcore naders. This kit also has a knife, a pistol, 4 grenades, and a set of binoculars. Knifing your enemy is always fun, be but careful of running up to them, they can hear you! Binoculars can be used for sight or to spot enemys for artillary / mortars.
The NVA assault consists of the same exact thing except for having a M16, they have an AK-47 or an AKMS. The sound of this gun is always noticeable, and kills many every game. The AK-47 and AKMS are very simular, the AKMS is typically used in Jungle maps while the AK-47 is used in urban areas or bigger maps.
US Mechanic:
M14, Mines, Mortar
NVA Mechanic:
MAT-49, Mines, Mortar
US / NVA Mechanic: Both US and NVA mechanic kits are extremely helpful, especially for those operating armor vehicles for quick repairs. This kit for US, consists of a knife, a pistol, a M14 rifle, a torch, a wrench, claymores, mines, and C4. There are 2 US mechanic kits, you thought one kit contained all this!? No, these items are divided apon 2 kits. The M14 rifle of course does not have a big clip like the AK and M16, but the power is much much more. Hit a guy neck up with this thing, and consider him dead. The torch you might be wondering about, is used to destroy vehicles if you manage to get up next to their tanks, or destroying towers which allowes a team to spawn in certain areas / maps.
The NVA mechanic kit has 2 different setups as well. One of them is made up of basically the same thing as US. Only differences are, the main gun is not a M14 of course. It is a MAT-49. This is an automatic gun which I find to be surprisingly very accurate. The one NVA kit contains mines, a shovel and mines. (A shovel is used to place a spawn point for your team to spawn, this is extremly useful) The other is made up of a mortar, wire clippers (these are for setting bombs on vehicles for when they get inside, it goes BoOm!!) and mines.
US Rocketman:
LAW Rocket Launcher, M79 Grenade Launcher
NVA Rocketman:
SKS-56, RPG2, RPG-7, VSA-7
Looking at these just makes you want to pick up the game now and blaze down the guys with your rockets, eh? lol
US / NVA RocketMan / Grenade Launcher: This kit is also very popular in the fields of Vietnam. The US kit is made of a knife, a pistol, a M-60 or a M-14, a Grenade Launcher or a LAW. There are 2 kits again, obviously. One has the primary knife and pistol with the M-60 (a heavy machine gun with 100 bullets per round and accurate when prone), and a Grenade Launcher - M79. The M79 has a large explode radius and can kill multiples at a time with a nice shot. The other kit has a M14 (the all mighty rifle) and a LAW, A.K.A - "Noob ToOb." This thing is used againts infantry when accuracy isn't important. lol Primarily the LAW rocket launcher is used againt armor, jeeps, and Anti-Aircraft.
The NVA rocketman kit consists of 3 different setups. One of these has the SKS-56 with the RPG2 and grenade. This is with the knife and pistol of course. The SKS-56 is a semi-automatic which can be pretty useful for mid-range, as it has a large amount of accuracy. The RPG2 is a rocket launcher typically given on the Jungle maps. The rockets on this gun tend to dive down a lot. Another setup has the SKS-56 and a RPG-7V. The RPG-7V does not drop as much and is found to be the better of the two. The final kit for the NVA Rocketman has the knife, pistol, SA-7, and C4. The SA-7 is used to take down your incredible helicopter. These are heat-seeking rocket launchers and it takes a total of 3 hits on a chopper for it to go down completely. They have a pretty far lock on rate. (Up to 2 miles in real life)
US Sniper:
M21, M16 With Scope
NVA Sniper:
Type 53, SVD, Bouncing Betties
Probably the least played kit in the game. Although this kit does have a very very powerful shot, most players like to hit the grounds with their automatics. The US Sniper kit has a M40 or a M21 or a M16 W/ Scope. Each of which have their advantages or preferences. First, the M40. This gun is much like the M21 but quiter. It looks to be a big piece of wood, but it is great for poping those heads when sniping a base. The M21 as I said, is very simular but louder, which could give your position away easier. The M16 With a Scope is much much less accurate but isn't exactly a "sniper rifle." It is a semi-automatic and great for waiting for guys to pour over a bridge or something of that nature. All of these rifles come with Smoke Grenades which are perfect for running across streets, open areas.
The NVA side of the story for Sniper is pretty different. There are 2 setups for the sniper kit. One has the Type-53, the Type-53 is a semi-automatic and slightly more accurate than the M16 W/Scope. It is much like the SKS-56. The other contains the SVD, the SVD is somewhat quite and shakes every time you fire. The sound is extremely noticeable, you will never forget it. The Type-53 sniper kit comes with Bouncing Betties and Time Bombs. The Betties are placed on the ground (GREAT for tunnels) and explode when ran over by infantry. Time Bombs are good if you happen to come across a sitting duck. You find a guy chilling in an AA gun so you toss a Time Bomb on him. About 10 secs later, he be dead.
3. Armor -
US Armor:
M-110, M-113, Sheridan, Patton
First, the M-110. This thing is devistating. The arty gun on this has a HUGE blast radius, and if you feel like lighting up a hill, hop on this piece of work! It is very slow moving however. There is a driver seat and an arty seat. Then the M-113, this is a mobile APC which can be airlifted by the US Helicopters. It has many passenger seats and a gunner seat. The gun isn't too great on this, but effective when stationary. The Sheridan is also transportable by the US Choppers. It is lighter than the other tanks which makes this possible. Being light isn't always great however. The protection on this is slightly less and it can not travel through much water at all. This tank tends to shake a lot when the big gun is fired. There is also a gunner seat on top, which I don't advise you choose to take part in. The Patton is a much better tank IMO. It is stable, strong, and turns nicely. It can not travel through rivers of course but better than the Sheridan in the water department. It also has a gunner seat on top.
NVA Armor:
BTR-60, PT-76, T-54, ZSU, BM-21
The BTR-60... It has many passenger seats up 8 I believe. It has a gunner seat which is highly effective. If you are sitting still on that thing and you have a bunch of bodies to shoot, you are set. The gun is a large machine gun, and great for spraying them down. Great for taking flags. The PT-76 is a bit slower than the other tanks, but great on armor. There are always advantages/disadvantages. The T-54 is the prefered tank of the NVA forces. It has good steerability and control. The armor is decent and overall a nice tank. The ZSU is an AA vehicle. It is very very very powerful against those Hueys or ANY air. It has a double gun on it which doesn't just fire puny bullets, it fires of some explosive rounds that will take down that chopper in about 10 secs if you have good accuracy. I highly advise hopping in this and find ing a cozy spot. The BM-21 is fat and obnoxious. It has a driver seat and the missler launcher seat. The missles have I think like 10 in one round and are very hard to hit things with. The entire vehicle shakes when you shoot so, if you can take down things with it cosider the possibility that you have some skills.
4. Water Vehicles
Tango, PBR
(There are no pics for NVA Water Vehicles Available)
Water Vehicles:
The Tango is the US carrier. It has 2 machine guns on it pointing on both sides, and a monstrous turret which will take out a tank momentarily. It is very very slow however. It is a spawn point for the US team, and is helpful when being driven to a main base for the capture. The PBR is much much much faster than the Tango and hurts the air forces the most. There is a big machine gun up front which (when stationary) will take down a Mi-8 in one clip if hit perfectly. There is also a gun on the back exactly the same as the small guns on the Chinook and Transport Helicopter. There are both US boats. The NVA water vehicle is harldly ever used because it is so horrible. There are no big guns or anything, not a spawn point, nada. You are simply sitting under a small roof carrying your AK-47 while some drives. On top of that, it is mega slow.
My Thoughts:
Personally, I think this is the greatest game ever. It combines competition with fun. You can hop on the game and blast your Vietnam music down the streets or play in a league and battle for the trophy. The game is always 100% fun. The noises people make when they die, getting knifed, its hilarious. I didn't think there was ever going to be a game close to this until BF2. That game was also great but I believe this tops them all. The game is the perfect combination of hardcore FPSing and having a ball. You can't help but enjoy yourself. lol
